What is the procedure going to be like?
IVF is termed as In Vitro Fertilization. The procedure mainly involves 3 steps.

• Egg retrieval.
• Fertilization with the sperm.
• Embryo transfer.

• Egg retrieval: Eggs are naturally placed in a fluid filled structure called as follicle in your ovaries. The egg is near and almost loosely attached to the wall. Mature follicles are the ones to be extracted. With regards to the pain management, general anaesthesia is mostly provided to the patients so that they do not feel the pain or remember anything that happened throughout the procedure.

Once you are completely “out”, a needle is pricked and it makes its way to the ovary through the vaginal wall. Procedure tracking is done through an ultrasound. Once the needle is in, the eggs are extracted.

• Fertilization: Your partner shall be asked to provide sperm samples. And further the sperm will be injected in the egg. Fertilization takes place outside the body in the laboratory. Time taken for fertilization is around 2-5 days.

• Embryo transfer: You will be called to the clinic for getting the embryo transferred into the uterus. This procedure does not give you any pain but there might be some discomfort or uneasiness as this is performed under an ultrasound and you may have to stay with your bladder full. A speculum is used to part the vaginal walls so that your doctor is able to view the cervix clearly. A catheter is inserted through the vagina and the embryo is transferred into the uterus.

How will I feel after the embryo transfer?
You shall not feel anything unusual or abnormal after the transfer. You need to stay a little gentle on yourself after the procedure for around 2 weeks. You shall go through a pregnancy test after 2 weeks.

After 2 weeks, you shall come out with the good news you have been waiting to hear! The feeling of a life inside you shall give you a new reason to live! Pain and uneasiness shall seem to be smaller terms to bother about!
