The reasons for blockage of a fallopian tube happen without you realising it. Blockage of a fallopian tube is more of a reaction than a disorder, which can be treated completely.
Some of the reasons noted are,

  • Scar tissue
  • Fluid build up
  • Ruptured appendix in the past
  • Peritonitis
  • Chlamydia infection
  • Infection caused by an abortion

How do I come to know whether my fallopian tubes are blocked?

Fertilization of an egg occurs in the fallopian tube when the egg is released from the ovary which travels through the uterus and tubes.
In case, your fallopian tubes are blocked, the sperm fails to reach the egg and egg fails to reach the uterus.

For examination of the fallopian tubes, a specialised x-ray called hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is done. Through a small tube, the dye is placed in the cervix which travels through the uterus and the ovaries. When it is observed that the dye is not passing through the tube, it is clear that your fallopian tubes are blocked.

The best way to know about the health of the fallopian tubes is to undergo a hysterolaparoscopy which gives the most accurate information about not only the tubes but also uterus, ovaries and other surrounding structures. It is a minor surgery which is also known as key hole surgery.
Are there any fool proof treatments available?
The best option in this era for a woman having tubal problems and who is wanting to conceive is IVF. In this procedure, the process of fertilisation of egg & sperm which normally happens in the tubes is done in a test tube, in a lab and the resulting embryo is implanted in the uterus.

Having said that, couples who are not willing for an IVF can consider the following surgical options for opening the tubes. However, it is important to understand that the success rates for these procedures are lower than that with IVF.

  • Tubal cannulation: In this procedure, the catheter is inserted in the uterus and work is done at the point where the fallopian tube meets the uterus. This is a non surgical treatment and has 60-65% success rate.
  • Tubal reanastomosis: This is a surgical procedure where in, the area of the fallopian tube that has blocked up is extracted and the two ends are again attached to form a continuous tube.
  • Salpingostomy : When the end of the fallopian tube is blocked, this procedure is performed. Your surgeon creates a new opening within the fallopian tube entrance that is nearest to the ovary.
  • Fimbrioplasty : This procedure can be carried out when the part nearest to the ovary is partially blocked. Through this procedure, the blocked area is reconstructed.

What after the treatment?
You can go for a Hysterosalpingography after 3 to 6 months of surgery. This can reassure you whether the tubes have opened up.
In case you have had any surgical procedure, you will be given antibiotics to prevent an infection. Within 6 weeks, women return to their normal routine.

When can I try for conception after the treatment?
Your doctor can be the best decision maker in this regard as this completely depends on your improvement.
Nothing can stop you from getting yourself transformed into a mother. Old ways can never open new doors for you. You are the only person who can unblock the way for your baby! Do consult your doctor and take an immediate action over the issue, once detected.
Move ahead and create a new path for your baby’s arrival for it can only be paved with a mother’s will!
